Beasts of the eastern wild: #02

The Gharial a.k.a long nose croc

Jungle trecking in Nepal is fun. You walk on foot through a jungle where mighty beasts like rihnos, slothbears, crocs and ... the bengal tiger roam around. We were prepared, we had our cameras. You had to hire two guides, so we did. And they had sticks to protect us. We were prepared.

Todays edition is about the croc with the long nose. The Gharial. They can get up to 6m. Eats only fish. Once they were all over the rivers in the indian subcontinent, nowadays there are just 2% of their former population left. The gharial is listed as an critically endangered species. About 250 of them occured in the area of  today´s nationalpark in the 50´s, but they were facing the same situations as every where else. Only 38 were left.  A programm was started to hatch young cros from the egg and introduce them to the park when they are about 6 years old. Only a few of them survive, but the population is slowly recovering.

I saw this one while walking over a bridge in the park. Lucky moment, is was just chilling on a sandbank, ... i hope.
